Aries is the first astrological sign of the zodiac, named for the constellation of Aries, called "The Ram" in the Greek tradition, after golden ram that rescued Phrixos, taking him to the land of Colchis. Aries is ruled by the Planet of Mars. The zodiac element is Fire, and the quality is Cardinal. Being the first sign in the zodiac, Aries is associated with the astrological first house. Aries represents offensive power and begins at the Spring equinox. In Aries we move from the potential to the actual; from dormant to active participation. Considered to be a "masculine", positive (extrovert) sign. Desire, initiative, courage and action are words which best describe Aries.

Personality

Pioneering, adventurous, energetic, courageous, enterprising, confident, dynamic, quick-witted and freedom-loving. Aries can also be selfish, quick-tempered, impulsive, impatient, and undiplomatic.

Those of you with Sun in Aries may be considered the most hot-blooded, assertive and bold sign in the zodiac. The Aries individual is a very confident and enterprising person. The sign is courageous, quite bold and somewhat argumentative. Aries can also be irritable, quick tempered, but usually does not hold a grudge. The Ram can be restless, sometimes intolerant and contentious. It can be quite vocal when it doesn't like something. It can turn aggressive when strongly annoyed, although influences can mitigate this. Although it often does not consider itself so energetic, it tends to be very active and on-the-go, and can be quite hard-working. Aries is mostly direct, and hates keeping things inside, but sometimes may resign to this out of necessity (which can make him feel ill). It seeks to bring things out into the light, so that they can be dealt with properly and effectively.

Aries natives often have a kind of raw authenticity to them. They tend to be rather impulsive and adventuresome, a doer more than a talker. This sign is mostly sharp and to the point. It has a great intensity to it, and its natives tend to be completely invested in whatever they do and feel. On the other hand, they may be too intensive and dramatic at times, however A strong Taurus influence can help to soothe this. Aries people are usually very sensitive to the way they are treated by others and most will react aggressively when they feel disrespected or put down. Aries tends to be all-out and strongly marshalled when putting out effort, however it may prefer to use a more brute force as it sometimes lack the patience to deal with small, subtle details. A strong Saturn or Capricorn influence may alleviate this issue.

If you are an Aries, you are a natural leader no doubt about it. Your energy and enthusiasm has rarely any limits, and your courage is usually very high. You might tend to care little about the past, preferring to seek new avenues and adventures into the future, so you will always be pretty aggressive both physically and mentally when entering into new projects. You are also known for your directness. Issues are generally black and white to you, and once you decide on something, you stick to it, proclaiming the strength of your position in no uncertain terms. Your bluntness can often be upsetting to others, or even offensive, so try to control this part of your personality. Tact and diplomacy are not in your nature most of the time, so smoothing over someone's hurt feelings is awkward for you.

Weaknesses and Trouble Spots

If you are an Aries, you must mostly be wary of your abilities to be too reckless. Aries is also a fire sign, so you are quite aggressive, brave, and quick. You may often get the urge to jump into situations before examining them thoroughly, which can invite unnecessary problems. In dangerous situations, an Aries is at times the first to sacrifice themselves for someone elses safety. In relationships, romantic and in general, you are prone to get angry at small provocations and minor annoyances. In particular, you tend to be resistant to criticism, becoming aggressively defensive when your weaknesses are pointed out. Fortunately, however, your anger is short-lived - so long as the "fire" within you is "put out" or at least postponed for a better time.

You sometimes arouse envy in others because of your leadership position, your tendency to show off, and your impatience with others. You believe that when something needs to be done, it should be done right away, in a certain way, and you can't understand why anyone should be slow or difficult about it. You'll end up doing the job yourself if you feel others aren't holding up their end. This is not always the best path to follow, but an Aries individual has a tendency to be more independent and aggressive than most. Try not to be too stubborn but be wary of every detail and be realistic in order to survive complete failure.

Your natural aggressiveness is both commendable and dangerous, depending on how you direct it, of course. It's best to keep this in check by channeling your fighting spirit into business or sports-related competition—you can win those battles and hopefully make yourself and those around you happier as well.

Career & Financial

Aries are well-suited for a career in the military and / or politics. There are more Arians in the armed services than any other sign (this has been proven statistically). Part of this is the Ram's affinity for metal, but your ambition and hard work also tends to be rewarded with more power in the military structure, and there is certainly a love of directness there, and a lack of tact. Metal also influences other career choices: many Arians are mechanics, surgeons, butchers, and drivers of any type of vehicle.

Financially speaking, although you can't be bothered with most details, money is an exception. This is due to your strong need to be independent—if you're in debt, you're in a sort of financial prison, and will therefore feel confined and depressed until you're back in the black; then you can dash around with the best of them.

Since you relish a challenge, you are prone to financial recklessness. You have a tendency to move from job to job, either from boredom or an inability to compromise and work harmoniously with others. As long as you use your sense of independence, leadership, and ambition constructively, you will be financially rewarded. Just be careful not to flaunt it too much on showy things, or to invest in get-rich-quick schemes. Money fuels your sense of freedom, so try to be responsible with it.

Mythology

Aries, in ancient Greek mythology refers to Ares, the unpopular Greek god of war and murder. Aries became associated in Rome with Mars, an old and revered Italian fertility god and the Roman god of war. The son of Zeus and Hera, Ares not only embodied the act of war but its spirit as well. He carried on a long relationship with Aphrodite (Venus), who was already married to Hephaistos (Vulcan). Ares and Aphrodite (Mars and Venus) had three children: Harmonia, Deimos (Fear) and Phobos (Panic). The latter two were always associated with strife and battle, and the planet Mars' two moons were named after them. Ares was wounded by Pallas Athene in the Trojan War. After being helped back to Olympus by Helen, his own father Zeus, commented, "To me you are most hateful of all gods who hold Olympus,".

In Roman mythology, Mars was the Roman warrior god, the son of Juno and Jupiter, husband of Bellona, and the lover of Venus. He was the most prominent of the military gods that were worshipped by the Roman legions. The martial Romans considered him second in importance only to Jupiter (their main god). His festivals were held in March (named for him) and October. Initially Mars was a Roman god of fertility and vegetation and a protector of cattle, fields and boundaries and farmers. In the second century BC, the conservative Cato the Elder advised "For your cattle, for them to be healthy, make this sacrifice to Mars Silvanus you must make this sacrifice each year". Mars later became associated with battle as the growing Roman Empire began to expand, and he came to be identified with the Greek god Ares. Unlike his Greek counterpart, Mars was generally revered and rivaled Jupiter as the most honoured god. He was also the tutelary god of the city of Rome. As he was regarded as the legendary father of Rome's founder, Romulus, it was believed that all Romans were descendants of Mars.

Arians Throughout History

There is a long list of powerful military and / or political leaders in this sign, including the dictator Adolf Hitler, Soviet revolutionary president Nikolai Lenin, the formidable rulers Charlemagne and Otto von Bismarck, the great president and revolutionary thinker Thomas Jefferson, and the boisterous, power-monger-ing senator Joseph McCarthy. But leaders of other varieties also show up, including the demanding conductors Arturo Toscanini and Leopold Stokowski and billionaire industrialist J.P. Morgan.
